Psychological triggers are the only tool you can use to influence your customer’s behavior. Read on and find out why.

Your success comes down to one point! You have to understand how people react, and why.

And then use this knowledge to make them react the way you want them to!

Done with the endless sales theory and ready to actually close more deals? If you want to skip the ‘WHY’ and get straight to the ‘HOW’?

Make “Coffee with a Closer” your next move.

Human behavior is complicated – Human motivation is simple

The human subconsciousness evaluates the world whether it’s dangerous or friendly. Once it comes to a conclusion, it motivates the whole system, the body, the brain, the whole system, to act accordingly.

If it concludes a situation is dangerous, it generates fear. If it concludes its friendly, it generates happiness and joy.

Read the last sentence again, would you?

Your subconscious mind GENERATES the feelings AFTER it has decided that you are safe or in danger.

This decision happens on a completely subconscious level and it only takes a split-second to come to this initial conclusion.

You have no conscious control over it whatsoever!

Your customer’s subconscious mind is the ultimate decision-maker.
Tom Fox

Same goes for relationships with people.

If your subconscious decides that the person you have just met is trustworthy, cool and interested in your wellbeing, it will do everything to reconfirm this first assessment.

From all the different signals you are getting from your interaction with this person, your subconscious will pick the signals that are proving its first assessment to be true.

If it thinks that this is a dangerous, dishonest and sketchy person, it will pick only the signals which confirm this.

Your prospect is wired exactly the same way.

He is doing this with you as well.

He is putting you in one of these categories and there you stay!

If your first impression you are leaving is only slightly off, you will be in the “Sleazy-Salesman-Category” and you can’t do anything to get out of there.

At least not in the time you have to close your deal.

That’s why the first impression is so important and this is why I wrote a dedicated blog post about how to make the perfect first impression.

Well, now we know this, we can start using this knowledge deliberately to our advantage.

How does the subconscious decide what is dangerous or friendly?

These principles are the same for every human being. These criteria are inherited through tens of thousands of years of evolution because they allow us to survive, to relate to other people, and ultimately, to MAKE more people.

Because this is fact, you can stop giving a shit about the conscious brain and how decisions are made consciously.

You need to be able to address the reptilian brain!

The brain where fear lives alongside sex. The brain which decides about flight or fight. The brain which made us survive and evolve for 100’000 years.

It is the primal instincts you want to identify and leverage to your advantage.

You have learned already, that the people around you are the deciding factor for your success or failure.

Be it customers, saying yes or no

Possible business partners, fighting for you, or for your competition.

Bosses, giving you the resources you need, or not.

That is exactly why you have to understand how humans behave and make them behave the way you want them to.

There is a plethora of behaviors which have been programmed into us over 100’000 years of evolution.

There is an instinctive program running in each of us. Our job as salesmen is to identify and understand this program and to use it to our advantage.

Read on if you want to learn how you play your customer like a fiddle.

Alright then, you magnificent manipulators, let’s talk about emotional triggers.

Now, before you get all worried and start picturing some shady hypnotist swinging a pocket watch, let me assure you – this is about ethical persuasion, not mind control.

(Though, let’s be honest, a little mind control wouldn’t hurt in those tough negotiations, am I right?)

We’re All Emotional Creatures (Even If We Pretend Not to Be)

Here’s the thing: humans are emotional beings.

We like to think we make decisions based on logic and reason, but deep down, it’s our emotions that call the shots.

Our reptilian brain – that ancient, primal part of our noggin – is constantly scanning for threats, seeking pleasure, and making snap judgments.

And that’s where emotional triggers come in.

They’re like secret codes that unlock specific emotions in your prospect’s brain.

By knowing which buttons to push, you can create a sense of trust, excitement, urgency, or whatever the hell else you need to close the deal.

10 Triggers to Unleash Your Inner Sales Sorcerer

Now, there are a gazillion emotional triggers out there, but I’m gonna break down 10 of the most powerful ones that’ll have your prospects eating out of your hand (figuratively, of course).

1. Belonging: The “We’re All in This Together” Trigger

Humans are social creatures.

We crave connection, community, and the feeling of belonging.

Think about those die-hard sports fans, decked out in their team colors, chanting in unison.

That’s the power of belonging in action.

Here’s how to tap into this trigger:

Create a VIP customer club: Make your customers feel like they’re part of an exclusive group.

Host events or webinars: Bring your customers together to connect and learn.

Use inclusive language: Use “we” and “us” to create a sense of shared identity.

For a more in depth view, check this out

2. Fear: The “Boo!” Trigger

Fear is a powerful motivator.

It can make us do crazy things, like buy that extended warranty we don’t really need or hoard toilet paper during a pandemic.

Here’s how to use fear (ethically, of course):

Highlight potential risks: “What if you miss out on this opportunity?”

Create a sense of urgency: “This offer ends soon!”

Use scarcity tactics: “Only 3 spots left!”

You need to push the right buttons to open your customer’s wallet.
Tom Fox

3. Guilt: The “You Should Be Ashamed of Yourself” Trigger

Guilt can be a sneaky little bugger.

It preys on our conscience and makes us want to make amends.

Think of those sad puppy dog eyes in those animal shelter commercials.

Here’s how to use guilt (with a gentle touch):

Appeal to their sense of responsibility: “Don’t you want the best for your family?”

Highlight the consequences of inaction: “Imagine the regret you’ll feel if you don’t act now.”

4. Trust: The “I Got Your Back” Trigger

Trust is the foundation of any strong relationship, especially in sales.

People buy from people they trust.

Here’s how to build trust:

Be transparent and honest: Don’t overpromise or exaggerate.

Provide social proof: Showcase testimonials and case studies.

Offer guarantees: Reduce their risk with money-back guarantees or warranties.

5. Leadership: The “Follow Me” Trigger

People are naturally drawn to strong leaders.

They want someone to guide them, inspire them, and show them the way.

Here’s how to position yourself as a leader:

Share your expertise: Demonstrate your knowledge and experience.

Offer valuable insights: Provide unique perspectives and solutions.

Be confident and decisive: Show that you know what you’re talking about.

6. Values: The “This is What I Stand For” Trigger

Values are deeply held beliefs that guide our decisions and actions.

When you align your product or service with your prospect’s values, you create a powerful connection.

Here’s how to tap into values:

Understand your audience: Research their values and beliefs.

Highlight shared values: Emphasize how your offering aligns with their values.

The principle of reciprocity is deeply ingrained in human nature.

When you give something to someone, they feel obligated to give something back.

Here’s how to use reciprocity:

Offer free value: Provide helpful content, free consultations, or small gifts.

Go the extra mile: Do something unexpected and helpful for your prospects.

8. Scarcity: The “Limited Edition” Trigger

Scarcity creates a sense of urgency and desire.

When people think something is in limited supply, they want it more.

Here’s how to use scarcity:

Limited-time offers: Create deadlines for special deals or promotions.

Limited quantities: Emphasize that your product or service is in high demand.

9. Authority: The “Expert Approved” Trigger

People are more likely to trust and follow those they perceive as authorities or experts.

Here’s how to establish authority:

Showcase your credentials: Highlight your experience, qualifications, and achievements.

Share your knowledge: Create valuable content that demonstrates your expertise.

Get endorsements: Seek testimonials from respected figures in your industry.

10. Commitment and Consistency: The “I Said I Would” Trigger

People have a strong desire to be consistent with their previous commitments and actions.

Here’s how to use commitment and consistency:

Get small commitments: Start with small requests or agreements.

Build on those commitments: Gradually increase the level of commitment.

Alright, you smooth-talking superstars, let’s talk about non-verbal communication.

Now, before you start picturing me giving a lecture on public speaking (though, hey, I’ve been known to rock a microphone or two), let me clarify – this isn’t just about the words you say.

It’s about the entire package: your body language, your tone of voice, your facial expressions, and even the subtle cues you send without even realizing it.

Communication: It’s a Two-Way Street (and a Dance Floor)

Think of communication like a dance.

It’s a two-way exchange, a delicate balance between speaking and listening, between expressing and understanding.

And just like any good dance, it requires rhythm, timing, and a whole lot of finesse.

Verbal Communication: The 5% Rule

Now, here’s a mind-blowing fact: only 5% of your verbal communication is actually processed by your prospect’s brain.

That’s right, just 5%!

The rest is filtered out, ignored, or simply forgotten.

Why? Because our brains are lazy. They’re constantly looking for shortcuts, ways to conserve energy and avoid mental overload.

So, when you’re rambling on about your product’s features and benefits, their brain is probably thinking about what’s for dinner or that funny cat video they saw on YouTube.

Non-Verbal Communication: The Silent Superstar

So, if words aren’t enough, what else is there?

Well, that’s where non-verbal communication comes in.

Your body language, your tone of voice, your facial expressions – these are the silent superstars of communication.

They convey emotions, build rapport, and create a lasting impression.

Think about it:

A warm smile can instantly disarm a skeptical prospect.

A confident posture can convey authority and expertise.

A genuine expression of empathy can build trust and connection.

The Power of Non-Verbal Cues

Studies have shown that non-verbal communication can be even more powerful than verbal communication.

For example, one study found that people are more likely to believe a speaker’s message when it’s accompanied by congruent non-verbal cues, such as eye contact, nodding, and open gestures.

Practical Examples:

Use mirroring: Subtly mimic your prospect’s body language and tone of voice to build rapport.

Maintain eye contact: Show that you’re engaged and interested in what they have to say.

Use open gestures: Avoid crossing your arms or legs, which can convey defensiveness.

Vary your tone of voice: Keep your voice interesting and engaging by varying your pitch and pace.

Mastering the Art of non-verbal Communication

To become a truly effective communicator, you need to master both verbal and non-verbal communication.

It’s like being a conductor, orchestrating a symphony of words, gestures, and expressions that captivate your audience and lead them to your desired outcome.

Personal Anecdote Time!

I once gave a presentation to a group of executives.

I had prepared meticulously, rehearsed my pitch, and knew my material inside and out.

But during the presentation, I noticed that the audience seemed disengaged.

They were fidgeting, checking their phones, and avoiding eye contact.

I realized that my non-verbal communication was sabotaging my message.

I was standing stiffly, speaking in a monotone voice, and failing to connect with my audience on an emotional level.

I took a deep breath, adjusted my posture, and started speaking with more passion and enthusiasm.

I made eye contact with each person in the room, used hand gestures to emphasize my points, and injected humor into my presentation.

The transformation was immediate.

The audience became engaged, leaned in, and listened intently.

I ended up closing the deal, and I learned a valuable lesson about the power of non-verbal communication.

Now, before you start picturing me judging your fashion choices (though, hey, a good suit never hurts), let me tell you – this isn’t just about looking good.

It’s about creating an instant impact, setting the stage for success, and making sure your prospects remember you for all the right reasons.

The Reptilian Brain: Your First Impression Judge and Jury

You see, our brains are wired to make snap judgments.

That ancient, primal part of our brain – the reptilian brain – is constantly scanning for threats, assessing safety, and deciding whether to fight or flee (or in our case, whether to buy or say “bye”).

And guess what? That reptilian brain is judging you within seconds of meeting you. It’s like you’re being assigned a mental drawer: “trustworthy,” “sketchy,” “expert,” “amateur.”

And once you’re in that drawer, it’s damn hard to get out.

The Long Shadow of First Impressions

First impressions are like tattoos – they’re permanent (or at least really hard to remove).

If you show up late to your first meeting, even if you’re on time for the next ten, that initial tardiness will linger in their minds like a bad smell.

The Primacy Effect: Controlling the Narrative

The first bit of information someone receives about you shapes their entire perception of you.

It’s called the primacy effect.

So, if you can control that first impression, you’re already halfway to winning them over.

But here’s the catch: sometimes, you don’t get to control that first impression.

Maybe you have an assistant who schedules your meetings or a colleague who introduces you.

In those cases, you need to make sure they’re setting the stage for your grand entrance.

Personal Anecdote Time!

I used to have an assistant who would schedule my meetings.

At first, she’d just say, “Tom’s available to meet next week.”

But then I realized that wasn’t creating the right impression.

So, I coached her to say something like, “Tom’s schedule is packed, but I might be able to squeeze you in for a brief meeting next week. He’s in high demand, so you’re lucky to get some of his time.”

Creating Scarcity and Value

Remember that scarcity principle we talked about?

Well, it applies to your time too.

The more scarce you appear, the more valuable you become.

So, don’t just accept the first meeting time your prospect suggests. Tell them you’re booked solid and ask for alternative times.

This creates the impression that you’re in high demand and makes them feel even more fortunate to have your attention.

Our brain works on chemistry. Hormones, amino acids, transporting agents and so on are responsible for everything that happens in that concealed skull of yours.

All the pictures, noises, feelings and emotions are all artificially generated by different electrical, chemical and electromagnetic signals.

Taking this as a starting-point, we recognize that if we are able to mess around with our customers’ brain chemistry, we are able to control everything.

His mood, his perception, his behavior.

All we have to know to make him behave the way we want him to is giving his brain the right impulse to increase or decrease the level of certain chemicals in his brain.

Done with the endless sales theory and ready to actually close more deals? If you want to skip the ‘WHY’ and get straight to the ‘HOW’?

Make “Coffee with a Closer” your next move. Get weekly, battle-tested action steps delivered directly to your inbox – no fluff, just results.

Sounds manipulative?

Well, that’s because it is. And not only that. It’s super manipulative because like this we completely bypass his logical decision-making and play with him like we would play with a puppet on a string.

Let’s have a look at the single chemicals and what they are doing inside your head.

Meet Your Happy Chemicals

Dopamine, serotonin, oxytocin, and endorphin.

Each of these chemicals is released in response to different emotional states.

As a sales guy seeking to create any emotion or feeling or mood in our prospects, what better way to understand how to do that than specifically understanding when these four chemicals are released into our brain.

So let’s talk about each of these chemicals in turn.

Dopamine

Dopamine is released in the brain when we expect a reward.

It’s that exciting feeling we get when we are about to be rewarded.

For example, when you achieve a long-sought goal. Or even when you simply take a step toward a goal.

It’s also released when you see another person take a step toward a goal.

Ultimately it’s all about taking a step toward a goal and expecting to be rewarded for it.

Learning to ride a bike, playing an instrument, finishing a crossword puzzle, signing the deal and getting a promotion all release dopamine in our brain.

Serotonin

Serotonin flows in the brain when we feel significant or important.

When you feel confident and take pride in your work, serotonin is flowing.

Similarly, when we feel bigger or stronger than another, we release serotonin.

And ultimately, when we receive social recognition from our peers and communities, we release serotonin.

Oxytocin

Oxytocin is released when we feel trust.

It’s that good feeling when you are with someone you trust.

Social trust feels good because social alliances promote survival.

It’s similarly released through the physical touch of a loved one. As such, oxytocin is often called the love hormone.

Endorphin

Endorphins are released when you are feeling physical pain to give you a brief moment of euphoria as a survival mechanism.

Real physical distress triggers endorphins. Though laughing and crying also releases small bursts of endorphins.

“The brain is a chemical playground. Are you the game master?”
Tom Fox

Our Personalized Brain Chemistry

All of us have these four chemicals periodically flowing through our brain in response to our environment.

But the reality is each of us develop very different brain chemistry, affecting how these four chemicals manifest in each of us.

This is because before we are eight years old and during puberty, a substance called myelin is prevalent throughout our brain.

It coats our neurons and facilitates the creation of the neural network throughout our brain.

The experiences we have in our youth shape us and quickly create new neural pathways.

But when we get older, myelin reduces and it becomes much harder to modify the brain chemistry to create new pathways.

So it’s important to remember how each of us is wired differently based on our early life experiences, varying the effect and frequency of release of each of these happy chemicals in our brain.

We can use these effects to generate every picture, feeling or emotion we want in our customer’s brain.

If we know how.

Now, before you start picturing me hitting a giant “pitch” button with flashing lights and sirens (though, hey, a little drama never hurts), let me clarify – this isn’t about abruptly shifting gears and launching into a hard sell.

It’s about smoothly and seamlessly guiding your prospect from casual conversation to a focused presentation of your product or service.

The “Permission to Proceed” Principle

Think of it like asking someone for a dance.

You wouldn’t just grab their hand and start waltzing without their consent, would you? (Well, maybe some of you would, but that’s a different blog post…)

Similarly, in sales, it’s crucial to get your prospect’s permission before launching into your pitch.

This shows respect for their time, demonstrates your professionalism, and makes them more receptive to your message.

The Two-Fold Benefit of Asking for Permission

Asking for permission to pitch has two main benefits:

Further Qualification: If they’re not interested in hearing your pitch, they’ll let you know, saving you valuable time and effort.

And

Smooth Transition: By explicitly asking for permission, you create a clear shift in the conversation, signaling that you’re about to move into a more formal presentation of your offering.

The Art of the Ask: Four Approaches

Here are four different approaches to asking for permission to pitch, each with its own unique flavor:

1. The Direct Approach

“I know we’re just casually talking, but from what I hear, I think I might be able to help you. Would you be open to exploring how?”

This approach is straightforward and to the point. It shows that you’re confident in your ability to help and that you value their time.

2. The Buddy-Buddy Approach

“Hey [Name], you’ve told me about your challenges with [problem]. I’m thinking I might have a solution that could really help you. Want to hear more?”

This approach creates a sense of camaraderie and makes them feel like you’re on their team.

3. The Politician Approach

“Look, I know things are tough right now, and nothing seems to be going your way. But I have something that could change all that. Would you be open to hearing about a solution that could make a real difference?”

This approach appeals to their emotions and creates a sense of hope and possibility.

4. The “We’re in This Together” Approach

“I’ve faced similar challenges in the past, and I know how frustrating it can be. But I found a solution that worked wonders for me, and I think it could help you too. Would you be interested in learning more?”

This approach builds rapport by showing that you understand their struggles and that you’ve been in their shoes.

Alright, you empathetic emulators, let’s talk about the power of understanding.

Now, before you start picturing me with a crystal ball and a turban, claiming to read minds (though, hey, a little mystique never hurts), let me clarify – this isn’t about psychic abilities or mind control.

It’s about active listening, insightful questioning, and reflecting back your prospect’s needs and desires in a way that makes them feel deeply understood.

The “I Get You” Factor

People buy from people they feel understand them.

It’s a fundamental principle of human psychology.

When we feel like someone “gets” us, we’re more likely to trust them, open up to them, and ultimately, say “yes” to their requests.

Think about it: have you ever had a conversation with someone who just seemed to get you?

They listened intently, asked insightful questions, and reflected back your thoughts and feelings in a way that made you feel heard and validated?

It probably made you feel more connected to that person, right?

The Politician’s Playbook (But Done Right)

Politicians are masters of making people feel understood (or at least pretending to).

They use vague language, emotional appeals, and carefully crafted soundbites to create a sense of connection with their audience.

But let’s be honest, most of them are full of it.

They’re more concerned with winning votes than truly understanding the needs of the people they represent.

The Two-Step Tango to Understanding

Here’s a simple two-step process that will make your prospects feel more understood than they ever have before:

Step 1: The Information Extraction Mission

Ask insightful questions and listen actively to their responses.

Don’t let them get away with vague answers or generalizations.

Dig deeper, clarify their needs, and uncover their hidden motivations.

Example:

Prospect: “I need a more reliable solution.”

You: “Interesting. What does ‘reliable’ mean to you in this context? What have you experienced in the past that wasn’t reliable? And what are the consequences of not having a reliable solution?”

Step 2: The “Mind-Reading” Mirror

Once you’ve gathered enough information, it’s time to reflect back their needs and desires in a way that makes them feel like you’re reading their mind.

Use the Milton Model – a technique that involves using vague language to create a sense of connection and understanding.

Repeat back their key phrases and concerns, but frame them in a more general and relatable way.

Example:

Prospect: “I’m frustrated with our current system. It’s slow, unreliable, and it’s costing us money.”

You: “I understand. It sounds like you’re looking for a solution that’s fast, dependable, and can help you save money and increase efficiency. That’s something we can definitely help you with.”

The Power of Feeling Understood

When your prospects feel understood, they’re more likely to:

Trust you: They’ll see you as a partner who’s invested in their success.

Alright, sales pros, let’s ditch the stuffy sales manuals and dive into something truly powerful: the Milton Model.

Now, I know what you’re thinking: “Milton Model? Sounds like something I’d fall asleep to.”

But hold on tight, because this bad boy is anything but boring.

It’s like verbal judo for salespeople – a way to build trust, uncover hidden needs, and close deals like a total boss.

The Milton Model: A Two-Sided Coin

Think of the Milton Model like a coin.

One side is all about getting vague – talking in a way that creates a sense of connection and trust.

The other side?

That’s where we get specific – zeroing in on your prospect’s deepest desires and pain points.

Side 1: Mastering the Art of “Vague-Fu”

Ever listen to those motivational gurus who drop lines like “You are destined for greatness!” or “Unlock your infinite potential!”?

That’s the power of vague language in action. It’s so general that almost anyone can relate, making people feel good and ready to hear more.

Now, you might be thinking, “What does this have to do with selling?”

Well, imagine you’re chatting with a potential client. Instead of jumping right into your pitch, try sprinkling in some “Vague-Fu”:

“Everyone wants to be more successful, right?” (Who’s going to disagree with that?)

“Wouldn’t it be great to have more time and freedom?” (Appeals to a universal desire)

“I bet you’re looking for ways to improve your life.” (Open-ended and inviting)

“People are always looking for ways to increase efficiency and productivity.” (Relatable and non-threatening)

“It’s important to feel confident and in control of your decisions.” (Appeals to a basic human need)

Pro Tip: To really build rapport, try throwing in some “mind-reading” statements like, “I bet you’re thinking…” or “You’re probably wondering…” It creates an instant connection, like you’re on the same wavelength.

Why Does “Vague-Fu” Work?

Because people are naturally drawn to things that confirm their beliefs and desires.

By speaking vaguely in a way that aligns with their values, you’re tapping into their subconscious desire for certainty and belonging.

The effectiveness of vague language in the Milton Model stems from several psychological principles:

Confirmation Bias: We tend to favor information that confirms our existing beliefs and values. Vague statements that align with our worldview create a sense of resonance and make us more receptive to the speaker.

The Barnum Effect: This psychological phenomenon, also known as the Forer effect, describes our tendency to believe in generalized personality descriptions that could apply to almost anyone. Vague statements like “You’re someone who strives for success” or “You value personal growth” can trigger the Barnum effect, making people feel understood and increasing their affinity for the speaker.

Suggestibility: When we’re in a relaxed and receptive state, we’re more susceptible to suggestion. Vague language can bypass our critical thinking faculties and create a hypnotic effect, making us more open to the speaker’s influence.

Rapport Building: Vague language creates a sense of common ground and shared understanding. 1 When someone speaks in a way that aligns with our values and beliefs, we feel a sense of connection and rapport, making us more likely to trust and engage with them.

The Psychology of Vague Language

Vague language works because it allows the listener to fill in the gaps with their own interpretations and experiences.

This creates a sense of personalization and makes them feel like you understand them on a deeper level.

It also avoids triggering resistance or disagreement, as the statements are so general that it’s hard to argue with them.

Vague language operates on several psychological levels:

Ambiguity: Vague language is inherently ambiguous, allowing for multiple interpretations. This allows the listener to fill in the gaps with their own meanings and experiences, creating a sense of personalization and making the message more relevant to them.

Emotional Resonance: Vague language often uses emotionally charged words and phrases that evoke positive feelings and associations. This can create a sense of hope, inspiration, or connection, making the listener more receptive to the speaker’s message.

Bypass Critical Thinking: By avoiding specific details and concrete claims, vague language can bypass our critical thinking faculties and tap into our emotions and subconscious desires. This can make us more susceptible to suggestion and influence.

Create a Hypnotic Effect: The rhythmic and flowing nature of vague language can create a hypnotic effect, inducing a relaxed and receptive state in the listener. This can make them more open to the speaker’s suggestions and ideas.

Build Trust and Rapport: By speaking in a way that aligns with our values and beliefs, vague language can create a sense of common ground and shared understanding. This fosters trust and rapport, making us more likely to engage with the speaker and consider their perspective.

By understanding the psychology of vague language, we can use the Milton Model to build rapport, create a connection with our prospects, and prime them for a more persuasive and effective sales pitch.

Master the art of ‘Vague-Fu’ and become a sales ninja.
Tom Fox

Side 2: Becoming the “Specificity Sniper”

Now, when it’s time to make the sale, we flip the coin and get laser-focused.

Remember this golden rule: If you don’t know the problem, you can’t present the solution.

Here’s the thing: people often describe their problems in vague terms. “My sales are down.” “I’m not happy with my current marketing.”

That’s about as useful as a screen door on a submarine. You need to dig deeper, my friend.

So, channel your inner Sherlock Holmes and start asking specific questions:

“What do you mean by ‘not fast enough’? What are your specific speed requirements?”

“What specifically are you unhappy with? What are your ideal outcomes?”

“Can you give me an example of a time when this problem caused a significant issue?”

“What have you already tried to solve this problem?”

“What are your biggest concerns or fears regarding this issue?”

“What metrics are you using to measure success in this area?”

“What is your budget for this type of solution?”

“Who else is involved in the decision-making process?”

“What is your timeline for implementing a solution?”

Pro Tip: Keep a list of these “Specificity Sniper” questions handy. The more precise you are, the better you’ll understand their pain points.

This might feel a bit uncomfortable for your prospect at first, but trust me, it’s crucial. By getting them to articulate their challenges, you achieve two things:

You qualify them: Are they a serious buyer, or just kicking tires? No more wasting time on dead-end leads.

You build deeper rapport: When you truly understand their problems, they feel heard and understood, strengthening your bond.

Why Does Specificity Work?

The power of specificity in the Milton Model is rooted in several psychological principles:

Clarity and Focus: Specific language helps to clarify the problem and focus the conversation on finding a solution. It avoids ambiguity and ensures that both parties are on the same page.

Problem-Solving: By getting specific about the problem, you can identify the root cause and develop a targeted solution. This demonstrates your expertise and builds confidence in your ability to help.

Emotional Engagement: Specific details and examples can evoke stronger emotions and create a deeper connection with the prospect. This can make your message more memorable and persuasive.

Credibility and Trust: When you ask specific questions and demonstrate a genuine interest in understanding their challenges, it builds trust and credibility. It shows that you’re not just trying to make a quick sale, but that you’re invested in finding a solution that truly meets their needs.

The Psychology of Specific Language

Specific language operates on several psychological levels:

Reduces Ambiguity: Specific language eliminates ambiguity and ensures clarity in communication. This helps to avoid misunderstandings and ensures that both parties are on the same page.

Triggers Vivid Imagery: Specific details and examples create vivid mental images, making the message more engaging and memorable. This can help to bypass the prospect’s critical thinking faculties and tap into their emotions.

Enhances Credibility: Using specific data, facts, and examples supports your claims and enhances your credibility. This makes your message more persuasive and trustworthy.

Creates a Sense of Urgency: Specific deadlines, timelines, and consequences can create a sense of urgency, motivating the prospect to take action sooner rather than later.

Facilitates Problem-Solving: By getting specific about the problem, you can identify the root cause and develop a targeted solution. This demonstrates your expertise and builds confidence in your ability to help.

By understanding the psychology of specific language, we can use the Milton Model to uncover hidden needs, qualify our prospects, and position ourself as the solution to their problems.

Okay, sales ninjas, let’s talk about grabbing attention and keeping your prospects engaged.

In today’s world of distractions, it’s not enough to just have a great product or service; you need to cut through the noise and make your message stick.

That’s where pattern interrupts come in.

Why Pattern Interrupts Work

Our brains are wired to pay attention to novelty and change.

We’re constantly scanning our environment for anything that’s new, unusual, or potentially threatening.

This is a survival mechanism that helped our ancestors stay alert and avoid danger.

In today’s world, this same mechanism makes us susceptible to distractions.

Our brains are bombarded with information, and we’ve become accustomed to filtering out most of it.

To get your message heard, you need to break through that filter and grab your prospect’s attention.

Pattern interrupts do just that.

They disrupt our expectations and force us to pay attention.

They shake us out of our mental autopilot and make us more receptive to new information.

The Psychology of Pattern Interrupts

Several psychological principles explain the effectiveness of pattern interrupts:

The Orienting Response: When we encounter something unexpected, our brains trigger an orienting response. This is a reflex that causes us to pay attention and focus our senses on the new stimulus.

Cognitive Dissonance: When we encounter information that contradicts our expectations or beliefs, it creates a state of cognitive dissonance, a mental discomfort that we’re motivated to resolve. Pattern interrupts can create this dissonance, making us more likely to pay attention and seek resolution.

The Von Restorff Effect: Also known as the isolation effect, this principle suggests that we’re more likely to remember something that stands out from its surroundings. Pattern interrupts create this distinctiveness, making your message more memorable.

Curiosity and Intrigue: Pattern interrupts can pique our curiosity and make us want to learn more. This can be a powerful tool for engaging your prospects and keeping them interested in your message.

Pattern Interrupts: The Verbal, Visual, and Tactile Wake-Up Calls

Pattern interrupts can be anything that breaks the monotony and forces your prospect to pay attention.

Here are a few examples to get your creative juices flowing:

Verbal Shocks:

The Unexpected “No!”: Instead of always agreeing, try a well-placed “No!” when it makes sense. It’ll make them sit up and listen. For example, if a prospect says, “I’m sure your product is the most expensive on the market,” you could respond with, “No, actually, it’s not. We offer a premium product at a competitive price.”

The Bold Statement: Start with a surprising or controversial statement that challenges their assumptions. For example, “Most salespeople are wasting their time with outdated techniques.”

The Unexpected Question: Ask a question that’s completely unrelated to the conversation but piques their curiosity. For example, “If you could have any superpower, what would it be?”

If you want your customer’s attention, you have to earn it.
Tom Fox

Visual Disruptions:

The Power of Tattoos: If you have tattoos, subtly reveal them at a key moment. It’s a visual cue that disrupts their expectations.

The Prop Surprise: Use a prop or visual aid that’s unexpected and relevant to your pitch. For example, if you’re selling a software product, you could pull out a tablet and show them a live demo.

The Dramatic Pause: Suddenly stop talking and make direct eye contact. This creates suspense and anticipation.

Tactile Tactics:

The Handshake Shift: Change your handshake mid-way through (e.g., from firm to gentle). It’ll make them wonder what just happened.

The Object Handoff: Pass them an object related to your pitch (e.g., a sample product, a unique business card). This engages their sense of touch and curiosity.

Real-World Examples

Retail Sales: If you’re selling clothes, instead of the usual “Can I help you find anything?” try, “That color looks amazing on you! It reminds me of [something unexpected and positive].”

Car Sales: When a customer gets in the car for a test drive, instead of the standard spiel, say, “Before we start, I have to ask – what’s the craziest thing you’ve ever done in a car?”

Insurance Sales: Instead of launching into a boring explanation of policies, start with, “Imagine this: You’re driving down the highway, and suddenly…” (pause for dramatic effect).

Remember

Be authentic: Don’t force it. Choose pattern interrupts that feel natural to you and align with your personality.

Be respectful: Don’t be offensive or disrespectful. The goal is to engage, not alienate.

Be strategic: Use pattern interrupts at key moments in the conversation to emphasize important points or create memorable experiences.

So, ditch the boring sales scripts and embrace the power of pattern interrupts. Your prospects (and your sales numbers) will thank you.

Alright, you masters of suspense, let’s talk about the primal power of fear and how to wield it ethically in your sales arsenal.

Now, before you start picturing me jumping out of a dark alley with a hockey mask, let me clarify – we’re not talking about terrorizing your prospects.

We’re talking about ethically using fear to motivate them, to create a sense of urgency, to make them realize they need what you’re selling.

The Primal Scream: Why Fear is Our Evolutionary Ally

Fear, far from being a mere fleeting emotion, is a deeply ingrained survival mechanism, a legacy passed down from our ancestors who faced real, tangible threats.

Imagine the dangers they confronted: saber-toothed tigers lurking in the shadows, treacherous terrain that could lead to fatal falls, and scarce resources that meant the difference between life and death.

This primal emotion served a critical evolutionary purpose.

Fear triggers the “fight-or-flight” response, a rapid physiological reaction that prepares our bodies to react instantly to danger.

This response is crucial for survival, enabling us to either confront a threat directly or escape from it swiftly.

Moreover, fear drives us to avoid potentially harmful situations, acting as a powerful deterrent against physical and emotional harm.

It fosters caution and vigilance, enabling us to anticipate and prepare for future threats.

Crucially, fear also encourages us to stay within social groups.

The inherent danger of being alone, exposed and vulnerable, compels us to seek the security and protection of a community.

When we experience fear, the amygdala, the part of the brain responsible for processing emotions, activates.

This triggers the release of adrenaline and other stress hormones, leading to increased heart rate, rapid breathing, and heightened awareness.

This physiological response prepares us to either confront the threat or escape from it, a testament to fear’s vital role in our evolutionary journey.

Fear in the Modern Sales Arena: Ethical Influence, Not Manipulation

While we’re no longer dodging woolly mammoths, the fear response still plays a significant role in our decision-making.

Fear and Bonding: The Strange Bedfellows

Here’s a fascinating tidbit: research shows that people who experience fear together tend to bond more strongly.

Think about that time you watched a horror movie with your friends and clung to each other in terror.

You probably felt closer to them afterward, right?

So, how can you use this in your sales process?

Well, I’m not suggesting you take your prospects on a haunted hayride or force them to watch “The Exorcist.”

But you can create experiences that evoke a mild sense of fear or excitement, which can lead to increased bonding and trust.

Think about things like:

Taking them on an adventurous outing: Go zip-lining, white-water rafting, or rock climbing.

Hosting a thrilling virtual reality experience: Immerse them in a virtual world that gets their adrenaline pumping.

Creating a fun competition or challenge: Tap into their competitive spirit with a friendly contest.

Key Takeaway:

Fear is a powerful emotion that can be used to drive sales, but it must be used ethically and responsibly.

By understanding the psychology of fear and applying it with integrity, you can create a sense of urgency and motivate prospects to take action.

So, go out there and master the art of fear-based selling.

Just don’t forget to bring a flashlight – you never know what might be lurking in the shadows.
