Psychological triggers are the only tool you can use to influence your customer’s behavior. Read on and find out why.

Your success comes down to one point! You have to understand how people react, and why.

And then use this knowledge to make them react the way you want them to!

Human behavior is complicated – Human motivation is simple

The human subconsciousness evaluates the world whether it’s dangerous or friendly. Once it comes to a conclusion, it motivates the whole system, the body, the brain, the whole system, to act accordingly.

If it concludes a situation is dangerous, it generates fear. If it concludes its friendly, it generates happiness and joy.

Read the last sentence again, would you?

Your subconscious mind GENERATES the feelings AFTER it has decided that you are safe or in danger.

This decision happens on a completely subconscious level and it only takes a split-second to come to this initial conclusion.

You have no conscious control over it whatsoever!

Your customer’s subconscious mind is the ultimate decision-maker.
Tom Fox

Same goes for relationships with people.

If your subconscious decides that the person you have just met is trustworthy, cool and interested in your wellbeing, it will do everything to reconfirm this first assessment.

From all the different signals you are getting from your interaction with this person, your subconscious will pick the signals that are proving its first assessment to be true.

If it thinks that this is a dangerous, dishonest and sketchy person, it will pick only the signals which confirm this.

Your prospect is wired exactly the same way.

He is doing this with you as well.

He is putting you in one of these categories and there you stay!

If your first impression you are leaving is only slightly off, you will be in the “Sleazy-Salesman-Category” and you can’t do anything to get out of there.

At least not in the time you have to close your deal.

That’s why the first impression is so important and this is why I wrote a dedicated blog post about how to make the perfect first impression.

Well, now we know this, we can start using this knowledge deliberately to our advantage.

How does the subconscious decide what is dangerous or friendly?

These principles are the same for every human being. These criteria are inherited through tens of thousands of years of evolution because they allow us to survive, to relate to other people, and ultimately, to MAKE more people.

Because this is fact, you can stop giving a shit about the conscious brain and how decisions are made consciously.

You need to be able to address the reptilian brain!

The brain where fear lives alongside sex. The brain which decides about flight or fight. The brain which made us survive and evolve for 100’000 years.

It is the primal instincts you want to identify and leverage to your advantage.

You have learned already, that the people around you are the deciding factor for your success or failure.

Be it customers, saying yes or no

Possible business partners, fighting for you, or for your competition.

Bosses, giving you the resources you need, or not.

That is exactly why you have to understand how humans behave and make them behave the way you want them to.

There is a plethora of behaviors which have been programmed into us over 100’000 years of evolution.

There is an instinctive program running in each of us. Our job as salesmen is to identify and understand this program and to use it to our advantage.

Alright, you smooth-talking superstars, let’s talk about non-verbal communication.

Now, before you start picturing me giving a lecture on public speaking (though, hey, I’ve been known to rock a microphone or two), let me clarify – this isn’t just about the words you say.

It’s about the entire package: your body language, your tone of voice, your facial expressions, and even the subtle cues you send without even realizing it.

Communication: It’s a Two-Way Street (and a Dance Floor)

Think of communication like a dance.

It’s a two-way exchange, a delicate balance between speaking and listening, between expressing and understanding.

And just like any good dance, it requires rhythm, timing, and a whole lot of finesse.

Verbal Communication: The 5% Rule

Now, here’s a mind-blowing fact: only 5% of your verbal communication is actually processed by your prospect’s brain.

That’s right, just 5%!

The rest is filtered out, ignored, or simply forgotten.

Why? Because our brains are lazy. They’re constantly looking for shortcuts, ways to conserve energy and avoid mental overload.

So, when you’re rambling on about your product’s features and benefits, their brain is probably thinking about what’s for dinner or that funny cat video they saw on YouTube.

Non-Verbal Communication: The Silent Superstar

So, if words aren’t enough, what else is there?

Well, that’s where non-verbal communication comes in.

Your body language, your tone of voice, your facial expressions – these are the silent superstars of communication.

They convey emotions, build rapport, and create a lasting impression.

Think about it:

A warm smile can instantly disarm a skeptical prospect.

A confident posture can convey authority and expertise.

A genuine expression of empathy can build trust and connection.

The Power of Non-Verbal Cues

Studies have shown that non-verbal communication can be even more powerful than verbal communication.

For example, one study found that people are more likely to believe a speaker’s message when it’s accompanied by congruent non-verbal cues, such as eye contact, nodding, and open gestures.

Practical Examples:

Use mirroring: Subtly mimic your prospect’s body language and tone of voice to build rapport.

Maintain eye contact: Show that you’re engaged and interested in what they have to say.

Use open gestures: Avoid crossing your arms or legs, which can convey defensiveness.

Vary your tone of voice: Keep your voice interesting and engaging by varying your pitch and pace.

Mastering the Art of non-verbal Communication

To become a truly effective communicator, you need to master both verbal and non-verbal communication.

It’s like being a conductor, orchestrating a symphony of words, gestures, and expressions that captivate your audience and lead them to your desired outcome.

Personal Anecdote Time!

I once gave a presentation to a group of executives.

I had prepared meticulously, rehearsed my pitch, and knew my material inside and out.

But during the presentation, I noticed that the audience seemed disengaged.

They were fidgeting, checking their phones, and avoiding eye contact.

I realized that my non-verbal communication was sabotaging my message.

I was standing stiffly, speaking in a monotone voice, and failing to connect with my audience on an emotional level.

I took a deep breath, adjusted my posture, and started speaking with more passion and enthusiasm.

I made eye contact with each person in the room, used hand gestures to emphasize my points, and injected humor into my presentation.

The transformation was immediate.

The audience became engaged, leaned in, and listened intently.

I ended up closing the deal, and I learned a valuable lesson about the power of non-verbal communication.

Our brain works on chemistry. Hormones, amino acids, transporting agents and so on are responsible for everything that happens in that concealed skull of yours.

All the pictures, noises, feelings and emotions are all artificially generated by different electrical, chemical and electromagnetic signals.

Taking this as a starting-point, we recognize that if we are able to mess around with our customers’ brain chemistry, we are able to control everything.

His mood, his perception, his behavior.

All we have to know to make him behave the way we want him to is giving his brain the right impulse to increase or decrease the level of certain chemicals in his brain.

Done with the endless sales theory and ready to actually close more deals? If you want to skip the ‘WHY’ and get straight to the ‘HOW’?

Make “Coffee with a Closer” your next move. Get weekly, battle-tested action steps delivered directly to your inbox – no fluff, just results.

Sounds manipulative?

Well, that’s because it is. And not only that. It’s super manipulative because like this we completely bypass his logical decision-making and play with him like we would play with a puppet on a string.

Let’s have a look at the single chemicals and what they are doing inside your head.

Meet Your Happy Chemicals

Dopamine, serotonin, oxytocin, and endorphin.

Each of these chemicals is released in response to different emotional states.

As a sales guy seeking to create any emotion or feeling or mood in our prospects, what better way to understand how to do that than specifically understanding when these four chemicals are released into our brain.

So let’s talk about each of these chemicals in turn.

Dopamine

Dopamine is released in the brain when we expect a reward.

It’s that exciting feeling we get when we are about to be rewarded.

For example, when you achieve a long-sought goal. Or even when you simply take a step toward a goal.

It’s also released when you see another person take a step toward a goal.

Ultimately it’s all about taking a step toward a goal and expecting to be rewarded for it.

Learning to ride a bike, playing an instrument, finishing a crossword puzzle, signing the deal and getting a promotion all release dopamine in our brain.

Serotonin

Serotonin flows in the brain when we feel significant or important.

When you feel confident and take pride in your work, serotonin is flowing.

Similarly, when we feel bigger or stronger than another, we release serotonin.

And ultimately, when we receive social recognition from our peers and communities, we release serotonin.

Oxytocin

Oxytocin is released when we feel trust.

It’s that good feeling when you are with someone you trust.

Social trust feels good because social alliances promote survival.

It’s similarly released through the physical touch of a loved one. As such, oxytocin is often called the love hormone.

Endorphin

Endorphins are released when you are feeling physical pain to give you a brief moment of euphoria as a survival mechanism.

Real physical distress triggers endorphins. Though laughing and crying also releases small bursts of endorphins.

“The brain is a chemical playground. Are you the game master?”
Tom Fox

Our Personalized Brain Chemistry

All of us have these four chemicals periodically flowing through our brain in response to our environment.

But the reality is each of us develop very different brain chemistry, affecting how these four chemicals manifest in each of us.

This is because before we are eight years old and during puberty, a substance called myelin is prevalent throughout our brain.

It coats our neurons and facilitates the creation of the neural network throughout our brain.

The experiences we have in our youth shape us and quickly create new neural pathways.

But when we get older, myelin reduces and it becomes much harder to modify the brain chemistry to create new pathways.

So it’s important to remember how each of us is wired differently based on our early life experiences, varying the effect and frequency of release of each of these happy chemicals in our brain.

We can use these effects to generate every picture, feeling or emotion we want in our customer’s brain.

If we know how.

Alright, you empathetic emulators, let’s talk about the power of understanding.

Now, before you start picturing me with a crystal ball and a turban, claiming to read minds (though, hey, a little mystique never hurts), let me clarify – this isn’t about psychic abilities or mind control.

It’s about active listening, insightful questioning, and reflecting back your prospect’s needs and desires in a way that makes them feel deeply understood.

The “I Get You” Factor

People buy from people they feel understand them.

It’s a fundamental principle of human psychology.

When we feel like someone “gets” us, we’re more likely to trust them, open up to them, and ultimately, say “yes” to their requests.

Think about it: have you ever had a conversation with someone who just seemed to get you?

They listened intently, asked insightful questions, and reflected back your thoughts and feelings in a way that made you feel heard and validated?

It probably made you feel more connected to that person, right?

The Politician’s Playbook (But Done Right)

Politicians are masters of making people feel understood (or at least pretending to).

They use vague language, emotional appeals, and carefully crafted soundbites to create a sense of connection with their audience.

But let’s be honest, most of them are full of it.

They’re more concerned with winning votes than truly understanding the needs of the people they represent.

The Two-Step Tango to Understanding

Here’s a simple two-step process that will make your prospects feel more understood than they ever have before:

Step 1: The Information Extraction Mission

Ask insightful questions and listen actively to their responses.

Don’t let them get away with vague answers or generalizations.

Dig deeper, clarify their needs, and uncover their hidden motivations.

You: “Interesting. What does ‘reliable’ mean to you in this context? What have you experienced in the past that wasn’t reliable? And what are the consequences of not having a reliable solution?”

Step 2: The “Mind-Reading” Mirror

Once you’ve gathered enough information, it’s time to reflect back their needs and desires in a way that makes them feel like you’re reading their mind.

Use the Milton Model – a technique that involves using vague language to create a sense of connection and understanding.

Repeat back their key phrases and concerns, but frame them in a more general and relatable way.

Example:

Prospect: “I’m frustrated with our current system. It’s slow, unreliable, and it’s costing us money.”

You: “I understand. It sounds like you’re looking for a solution that’s fast, dependable, and can help you save money and increase efficiency. That’s something we can definitely help you with.”

Alright, you social influencers of the sales world, let’s talk about consensus.

It’s not about leading a cult or manipulating minds (though, a little strategic influence never hurts).

It’s about understanding and leveraging our innate human drive to conform, to follow the crowd, and to trust that collective wisdom.

The “Monkey See, Monkey Do” Instinct: The Primal Power of Social Proof

Think about it: in moments of uncertainty, we instinctively look to others for cues.

This isn’t just about mimicking; it’s a deep-seated survival mechanism.

From navigating a new social setting to making complex purchasing decisions, we’re wired to gauge what’s ‘normal’ by observing the actions of those around us.

This inherent tendency, often referred to as ‘social proof,’ is a powerful psychological tool that can be strategically employed in sales.

The Science of Consensus: Beyond Peer Pressure, Into Psychological Assurance

Studies in social psychology reveal that our compliance increases significantly when we perceive that others are already engaged in a particular behavior.

This isn’t merely ‘peer pressure’; it’s a cognitive shortcut.

We subconsciously assume that if a large number of people are doing something, it must be valid, safe, or desirable.

This principle operates on a deeper level than simple observation.

It taps into our need for validation and reduces the perceived risk associated with making a decision.

Consensus also creates a powerful sense of normative influence.

It establishes what is considered ‘standard’ or ‘accepted’, effectively framing your offering as the logical, expected choice.

This reduces cognitive dissonance and creates a sense of comfort and familiarity, making the prospect more receptive to your proposition.

“Monkey see, monkey buy! Master the art of consensus and turn conformity into conversions.”
Tom Fox

Leveraging Consensus: Strategic Framing and Psychological Direction

The power of consensus lies in its ability to guide behavior through subtle cues and perceived norms. Here’s how to apply it:

Framing Unfamiliar Situations:

When introducing a novel concept or solution, subtly highlight its adoption by others.

Phrases like, “Many of our clients in similar situations have found this approach highly effective,” or “It’s becoming increasingly common for professionals in your field to…” create a sense of familiarity and acceptance.

This leverages the psychological principle of availability heuristic, making the option seem more common and therefore more valid.

Creating Perceived Norms:

Establish your offering as the ‘standard’ or ‘expected’ choice.

Emphasize the prevalence of your product or service within their peer group or industry.

This creates a psychological sense of social identity theory, making your product a symbol of belonging.

Guiding the Next Step:

Consensus can be used to subtly guide prospects towards the desired action.

By framing the next step as a common or logical progression, you reduce resistance and encourage compliance.

This leverages the psychological concept of priming, unconsciously influencing their subsequent behavior.

The Power of Subtle Guidance: Leading Through Psychological Understanding

The astute salesperson understands that consensus is not about overt manipulation, but about strategic guidance.

By understanding the psychological underpinnings of this principle, you can create an environment of trust and familiarity, making your prospects feel confident in their decision.

So, go out there and harness the power of the crowd. Your sales numbers (and your prospect’s sense of belonging) will thank you.

Listen up, money-hungry mercenaries of the sales world!

Let’s expose a dirty little secret that many companies try to keep hidden: the commission bait-and-switch.

It’s a classic corporate scam that can sabotage your earning potential, crush your motivation, and leave you feeling like you’ve been robbed.

The Commission Bait-and-Switch: A Classic Corporate Scam

Here’s how the con works: companies dangle juicy commissions in front of you like a carrot on a stick.

They promise you the world, enticing you to sell their products or services with the allure of a fat paycheck.

But as soon as you start hitting your targets and raking in the dough, they pull the rug out from under you.

They change the commission structure, lower the rates, cap your earnings, or introduce new rules and restrictions that make it harder to earn what you were promised.

It’s a shady tactic that leaves many salespeople feeling betrayed, demoralized, and cheated out of their hard-earned rewards.

Why Companies Play the Commission Game:

Here’s a deeper dive into the motivations behind those shady commission changes:

Cost Control: The “We’re Hemorrhaging Money!” Panic

Sometimes, companies genuinely miscalculate their commission structures. They may underestimate the earning potential of their sales team or overestimate the profit margins on their products or services. When they realize they’re paying out more than they anticipated, panic sets in.

Instead of taking a long-term, strategic approach to adjusting their compensation plans, they resort to knee-jerk reactions that often harm the very people who drive their revenue. They slash commission rates, introduce caps, or add complex qualifiers that make it harder to earn those juicy payouts.

This short-sighted approach can have a devastating impact on sales team morale. When salespeople feel like they’re being punished for their success, their motivation plummets, and their performance suffers. It creates a toxic environment of distrust and resentment, ultimately hurting the company’s bottom line.

Shifting Priorities: The “Flavor of the Month” Syndrome

Companies are constantly evolving, and their sales goals often shift with the changing tides of the market. They may introduce new products, target new customer segments, or prioritize different revenue streams.

While adapting to market changes is essential for survival, companies often fail to consider the impact of these shifts on their sales team. They may abruptly change commission structures to incentivize the “flavor of the month” product or service, leaving salespeople feeling like they’re constantly chasing a moving target.

This lack of consistency and transparency can create a sense of instability and frustration among the sales team. Salespeople may feel like their efforts are not valued, and their commitment to the company may waver.

Good Old-Fashioned Greed: The “All for Me, None for You” Mentality

Let’s face it, some companies are simply driven by greed. They want to maximize their profits, even if it means shortchanging the very people who generate those profits – their salespeople.

They may view commissions as an unnecessary expense rather than an investment in their sales team’s success. They may prioritize shareholder value over employee well-being, creating a culture of exploitation and resentment.

This type of greed-driven decision-making can have long-term consequences for the company. Top performers may leave for greener pastures, morale may plummet, and the company’s reputation may suffer, ultimately impacting their ability to attract and retain top talent.

The Problem with Capped Commissions and Shifting Goalposts:

Capped commissions and constantly changing compensation plans can be incredibly demotivating for salespeople.

It’s like running a marathon where the finish line keeps moving further and further away.

Imagine this: you bust your ass to exceed your quota, bringing in a flood of new business and generating record profits for the company.

You’re envisioning that well-deserved bonus, that luxurious vacation, that new car you’ve been eyeing.

But then, just as you’re about to cash in on those fat commission checks, they change the plan.

They reduce your commission rate, cap your earnings, or introduce new metrics that make it nearly impossible to hit your targets.

How motivated would you be to continue performing at that high level?

How much trust would you have in a company that pulls the rug out from under you just when you’re about to reap the rewards of your hard work?

The Ideal Commission Plan: Uncapped and Aligned with Your Goals

So, what should you look for in a commission plan?

Here are a few key elements that signal a company that values its salespeople and rewards their success:

Uncapped Commissions: This means there’s no limit to how much you can earn. The more you sell, the more you make. This creates a powerful incentive to perform at your best and truly rewards your efforts.

Commission Paid on New Logos: You’re rewarded for bringing in new business, which is the lifeblood of any company’s growth and expansion.

Commission Paid on Renewals: You’re also rewarded for retaining existing customers, building long-term relationships, and generating recurring revenue. This demonstrates a commitment to customer loyalty and sustainable growth.

Balanced Base and Variable Pay: A healthy balance between base salary and variable compensation (ideally around 50/50) provides a sense of security while still offering the potential for high earnings based on your performance.

When you’re evaluating a job offer, don’t just focus on the base salary or the fancy job title.

Pay close attention to the commission plan. It can make a huge difference in your earning potential, your motivation, and your overall job satisfaction.

Don’t settle for a capped commission plan or a company that’s constantly changing the rules of the game.

Find a company that values your contributions, rewards your success, and gives you the opportunity to earn what you’re truly worth.

Hey there, data-driven dealmakers!

Let’s dive deep into a metric that often gets overlooked in the job search: The team’s quota achievement.

This isn’t just about hitting those magic numbers; it’s about understanding the bigger picture, the underlying factors that contribute to a team’s success, and how that knowledge can empower you to make smarter career decisions.

The Quota Achievement Crystal Ball: A Glimpse into a Company’s Soul

Think of a team’s quota achievement as a crystal ball that reveals the inner workings of a sales organization.

It can tell you a lot about the company’s culture, the leadership style, the market dynamics, and the overall health of the sales team.

It’s a powerful indicator of whether a company truly values its salespeople, invests in their success, and fosters an environment where they can thrive.

Why You Should Care About Their Quota Achievement:

When you’re evaluating a potential sales job, don’t just focus on the product, the company’s reputation, or the fancy office perks.

Dig deeper and investigate the team’s quota attainment history.

It can give you valuable insights into what it’s really like to work there, beyond the polished marketing materials and carefully crafted interview answers.

Here are a few key things to look for:

Individual Performance: How are your future peers performing? Are they consistently hitting their quotas? Or are they struggling to keep up? This can tell you a lot about the team’s morale, motivation, and overall competence. A team of consistent high achievers suggests a supportive environment, effective training, and a product or service that’s in demand.

Tenure and Turnover: How long have the existing reps been in their positions? High turnover rates can be a major red flag, indicating potential issues with management, compensation, the product itself, or a toxic work environment. A team with long-tenured reps suggests a more stable and supportive environment where people feel valued and appreciated.

Team Performance: How does the team compare to other teams in the company? Is this team a top performer, consistently exceeding expectations and setting the bar high? Or are they lagging behind, struggling to meet their targets? This can give you insights into the market opportunity, the leadership quality, and the overall competitiveness of the team.

On-Target Earnings (OTE) Achievement: OTE is the total compensation a salesperson can expect to earn if they hit their quota. It includes base salary, commissions, bonuses, and other incentives. If a high percentage of reps are achieving their OTE, it suggests a fair and motivating compensation plan, a supportive environment for success, and realistic targets.

The Quota Achievement Detective:

To gather this valuable information, you might need to do some detective work. Here are a few resources to tap into:

Company Websites: Many companies publish data on their sales performance, employee satisfaction, and overall company culture. Look for annual reports, investor presentations, or blog posts that highlight their achievements and employee testimonials.

LinkedIn: Connect with current and former employees of the company and ask about their experiences. Inquire about the team’s culture, the leadership style, the challenges they face, and the opportunities for growth and development.

Glassdoor: Check out employee reviews on Glassdoor to get insights into the company culture, compensation structure, and work-life balance. Pay attention to both positive and negative reviews to get a balanced perspective.

Industry Reports: Industry publications often publish reports on sales performance, compensation trends, and best practices in different sectors. These reports can provide valuable context and benchmarks for evaluating a company’s quota achievement.

Alright, you silver-tongued devils, let’s talk about compliments.

Now, before you start picturing me showering my prospects with cheesy flattery (though, hey, a little appreciation never hurts), let me clarify – this isn’t about being fake or insincere.

It’s about strategically using compliments to guide the conversation, uncover hidden needs, and ultimately, close more deals.

Compliments: The Swiss Army Knife of Sales

Most salespeople use compliments like a rusty old butter knife – they’re good for spreading a little something nice, but they’re not exactly a precision instrument.

But in the hands of a skilled salesperson, compliments can be like a Swiss Army knife – versatile, multi-functional, and surprisingly effective.

The Counterintuitive Power of Compliments

Here’s a little psychological quirk you might not know: compliments often provoke a counter-reaction.

When you compliment someone, they often feel compelled to downplay or even contradict your compliment.

Think about it:

“Nice car!” -> “Oh, it’s an old beater.”

“You look great!” -> “I feel so bloated today.”

“That’s a brilliant idea!” -> “Actually, it’s not that original…”

We’ve all been there. Someone compliments our new shoes, and we mumble something about them being “old” or “on sale.” A colleague praises our presentation, and we deflect, saying it was a “team effort.”

It’s a common human experience, this awkward dance around praise.

But why do we so often reject the positive feedback offered to us?

Why does a compliment, intended to uplift, sometimes feel like a social tightrope walk?

It’s not about vanity or false modesty. The psychology behind compliment rejection is far more nuanced.

It’s a complex interplay of social dynamics, self-perception, and our innate desire for equilibrium.

The Balance Beam of Self-Esteem:

One key factor is our internal sense of balance.

We strive to maintain a consistent view of ourselves, a narrative that aligns with our self-perception.

When someone offers a compliment that significantly exceeds our internal valuation, it can throw off this balance.

It creates a feeling of disequilibrium, almost as if we’re being asked to step onto a higher platform without the confidence to stand there.

Rejecting the compliment, in a way, helps us restore that balance, bringing us back to familiar ground.

The Fear of Arrogance:

Another powerful motivator is the fear of appearing arrogant or conceited.

Accepting a compliment outright can feel like an admission of superiority, a boastful acknowledgment of the praise.

In many cultures, humility is highly valued, and readily accepting praise can be perceived as a violation of this social norm.

By downplaying or deflecting the compliment, we signal our humility and avoid the risk of being seen as boastful.

The Underlying Anxiety:

Sometimes, compliment rejection stems from deeper insecurities.

We might struggle with imposter syndrome, constantly fearing that we’re not as competent or deserving as others perceive us to be.

In such cases, a compliment can trigger anxiety, highlighting the discrepancy between our perceived self and the positive image reflected back to us.

Rejecting the compliment becomes a way of managing this anxiety, a protective mechanism against potential exposure.

The Social Script:

Let’s not forget the influence of social conventions.

Often, we’re simply following a well-worn social script.

We’ve learned that it’s polite to downplay compliments, to express gratitude while simultaneously minimizing the praise.

This dance of humility is a social ritual, a way of navigating social interactions smoothly and avoiding potential awkwardness.

The Sales Angle: Turning the Tables:

Now, how can we use this understanding in a sales context?

Understanding the psychology of compliment rejection can be a powerful tool.

By strategically using compliments, we can actually encourage prospects to reveal more about their needs and pain points.

The “too perfect” compliment, for example, can prompt a prospect to start listing their challenges, effectively opening the door for your solution.

Example 1: The “Too Perfect” Compliment

Tell a prospect that they seem to have everything figured out, that they’re in complete control of their finances, and that they probably don’t need your financial planning services.

Their response might surprise you.

They might start listing all the financial challenges they’re facing, opening the door for you to offer your expertise.

The “happy with the status quo” compliment can trigger a similar reaction, prompting the prospect to articulate their frustrations and unmet needs.

Example 2: The “Happy with the Status Quo” Compliment

Compliment your prospect on their current situation, suggesting that they’re perfectly happy with their existing product or service.

This might trigger them to start listing all the things they dislike about their current situation, giving you valuable insights into their pain points.

Example 3: The “No Need to Move” Compliment

If you’re in real estate, tell your prospect that they already live in a great neighborhood and that moving would be a hassle.

This might prompt them to start talking about all the things they dislike about their current home or neighborhood, giving you valuable information to use in your sales pitch.

These techniques, while seemingly counterintuitive, leverage the psychology of balance and the desire to maintain a consistent self-image.

By gently nudging the prospect off their perceived balance beam, you can create an opportunity for them to reveal valuable information.

The Key: Sincerity and Strategy:

It’s crucial to remember that this strategy should be employed with sincerity and genuine appreciation.

Manipulative flattery will quickly backfire.

The goal is not to trick the prospect but to create a safe space for them to express their true needs and concerns.

When used ethically and strategically, the compliment paradox can be a powerful tool for building rapport, understanding your prospects, and ultimately, closing more deals.

Compliments: Your Secret Weapon for Unlocking Hidden Needs

By mastering the art of the compliment, you can:

Uncover your prospect’s pain points and motivations.

Guide the conversation in the direction you want it to go.

Build rapport and create a sense of trust.

Position yourself as a helpful advisor, not just a salesperson.

So, go out there and start using compliments strategically. Just remember to be genuine and sincere, and avoid overdoing it. After all, no one likes a brown-noser.

Alright, you time-conscious closers, let’s talk about qualifying leads.

Now, before you start picturing me with a giant checklist and a stern expression, interrogating every prospect who dares to cross my path (though, hey, a little interrogation never hurts), let me clarify – this isn’t about being rude or dismissive.

It’s about respecting your time, prioritizing your efforts, and focusing on the prospects who are most likely to convert into paying customers.

In the fast-paced world of sales, time is your most precious commodity.

Every minute spent chasing a dead-end lead is a minute lost that could be spent nurturing genuine prospects.

Don’t Be That Guy (or Gal)

Don’t be the salesperson who spends hours chatting with a prospect, building rapport, and crafting the perfect pitch, only to find out at the end that they have no budget, no decision-making authority, and no real interest in your product or service.

So, how do you efficiently separate the wheat from the chaff?

The answer lies in masterful lead qualification.

But here’s the rub: prospects don’t always wear their intentions on their sleeves.

They often hold back, leaving salespeople to navigate a murky landscape of unspoken needs and hidden agendas.

Understanding why this happens is crucial for effective qualification.

The Shadowy World of Unspoken Intentions: Why the Silence?

Why are customers so often cagey about their true intentions?

It’s rarely about malice or a desire to mislead.

Instead, a complex web of psychological and situational factors comes into play:

Fear of Commitment:

Expressing a clear intention can feel like a premature commitment, something many prospects are hesitant to make, especially in the early stages of the sales process.

They might still be exploring options, comparing vendors, or unsure about budget.

Declaring their intentions too early feels like closing doors before they’re ready.

Information Gathering:

Some prospects are simply in information-gathering mode.

They may be genuinely interested but not yet ready to buy.

Openly stating their intention might feel like an unnecessary disclosure of vulnerability.

They want to maintain control of the information flow.

Negotiating Power:

Revealing their true intention can feel like giving up a bargaining chip.

Prospects may believe that by keeping their cards close to their chest, they’ll have more leverage in future negotiations.

They see it as a strategic game.

Lack of Clarity:

Sometimes, prospects themselves aren’t entirely clear about their own needs or priorities.

They might be exploring different solutions, unsure of the best fit.

In such cases, articulating a clear intention is difficult because it simply doesn’t exist yet.

Privacy Concerns:

Especially in B2B sales, revealing too much about their business challenges or future plans can feel like a breach of confidentiality.

They’re concerned about competitive advantage and data security.

Social Dynamics:

Sometimes, it’s just about navigating social interactions.

Some people are naturally more reserved and less forthcoming.

They might feel uncomfortable revealing too much personal or business information to a salesperson they’ve just met.

The Power of Qualification: Shining a Light in the Shadows

This is where effective qualification becomes essential.

It’s not about interrogation or high-pressure tactics.

It’s about skillfully guiding the conversation, asking the right questions, and creating a safe space for prospects to reveal their needs and motivations, even if they’re hesitant to explicitly state their intentions upfront.

Moving Beyond the “What”: The Importance of “Why”

The power of “why” is paramount.

Don’t just accept surface-level answers.

Dig deeper.

When a prospect expresses interest, don’t just celebrate the lead – ask why they’re interested.

What specific problem are they trying to solve?

What are their desired outcomes?

The answers to these “why” questions will provide far more valuable insights than a simple “yes, I’m interested.”

Early and Often: The Qualification Cadence

Don’t wait until the end of the sales cycle to start qualifying.

Integrate qualifying questions into your initial interactions.

This allows you to quickly identify potential roadblocks and avoid investing time in leads that are unlikely to convert.

It also demonstrates your expertise and positions you as a trusted advisor, not just a salesperson.

Qualifying Questions: Your Secret Weapon

The key to effective qualification is asking the right questions.

And those questions often aren’t the easy, feel-good ones.

They’re the tough, sometimes uncomfortable questions that get to the heart of your prospect’s needs and motivations.

Here are a few examples:

“What are your biggest challenges right now?”

“What are your goals for the next year?”

“What’s your budget for this type of solution?”

“Who else is involved in the decision-making process?”

“What’s your timeline for making a decision?”

Beyond Questions: Active Listening and Observation

Qualification isn’t just about asking questions; it’s also about active listening and careful observation.

Pay attention to what your prospects don’t say, as well as what they do.

Look for subtle cues, body language, and unspoken concerns.

These nonverbal signals can be just as revealing as explicit statements.

Our brains are complex chemical cocktails.

Hormones, neurotransmitters, and a host of other molecules orchestrate everything we experience—from the vibrant colors we see to the butterflies in our stomach.

Every thought, feeling, and action is the result of intricate electrochemical signals.

Knowing this, a fascinating (and potentially manipulative) question arises: can we influence these chemical processes to guide behavior?

The answer, unsurprisingly, is a qualified yes.

While complete control is a fantasy, understanding the neurochemistry of persuasion can give us salespeople a significant edge.

Done with the endless sales theory and ready to actually close more deals? If you want to skip the ‘WHY’ and get straight to the ‘HOW’?

However, it’s vital to acknowledge the ethical implications of manipulating someone’s brain chemistry, even subtly.

This post explores the science behind it, but responsible application is paramount.

Meet Your Happy Chemicals: The Neurotransmitters of Influence

Four key neurochemicals—dopamine, serotonin, oxytocin, and endorphins—play crucial roles in shaping our emotional states and driving our actions.

Understanding when and why these chemicals are released is like having a cheat code to human behavior.

Dopamine: The Reward Anticipator:

Dopamine surges when we anticipate a reward.

It’s the feeling of excitement and anticipation we get when we’re about to achieve a goal, take a step towards one, or even witness someone else doing the same.

Learning a new skill, completing a task, or closing a deal all trigger dopamine release.

This chemical motivates us to seek out rewarding experiences.

Serotonin: The Significance Signal:

Serotonin flows when we feel significant, important, or respected.

It’s associated with confidence, pride, and social recognition.

When we feel a sense of status or accomplishment, serotonin levels rise.

This chemical reinforces behaviors that contribute to our sense of social standing.

Your customer’s subconscious mind is the ultimate decision-maker.
Tom Fox

Oxytocin: The Trust Hormone:

Oxytocin is released when we feel trust and connection.

It’s often called the “love hormone” because it surges during physical touch and close relationships.

In a sales context, building rapport and establishing trust can stimulate oxytocin release, making the customer more receptive to your message.

Endorphins: The Pain Relievers and Mood Boosters:

Endorphins are released in response to physical pain and stress.

They act as natural painkillers and can induce a brief feeling of euphoria.

While you wouldn’t want to inflict pain on your customers, activities like laughter and emotional release can trigger endorphin release, creating a positive association with your brand.

Our Personalized Brain Chemistry: The Myelin Factor

While we all experience these neurochemical fluctuations, the specific ways they manifest vary significantly from person to person.

This is partly due to the influence of myelin, a substance that coats neurons and facilitates the creation of neural pathways in the brain.

During childhood and puberty, myelin is highly prevalent, allowing experiences to rapidly shape our brains and create strong neural connections.

As we age, myelin production decreases, making it more challenging to rewire our brains.

This means that early life experiences play a crucial role in shaping our individual brain chemistry and influencing how we respond to different stimuli.

Therefore, understanding your customer’s background and tailoring your approach accordingly is crucial for effective persuasion.
